THE CLINIC
Dr. David Reynolds threw the paperwork down on his desk in disgust. This was the third mal-practice suit this month. One more, and the board members were going to jerk his license.
He stood up, pulled a cigarette out of his desk drawer and lit up, while pouring a shot of bourbon into his coffee cup. He went to the window and stared out at the posh landscape. Palm trees swayed, as if on cue, and Reynolds could see the setting sun paint the ocean's waves in palettes of scarlet and gold.
He was fuming and frankly, frightened. The lease on this office space alone was over fifty thousand dollars a month. The support staff's salary was another seventy-five grand. Add an ex-wife with alimony and child support, together with a new girlfriend, with designer boobs and even more designs on whatever fortunes he had amassed as a plastic surgeon; David Reynolds, at the age of sixty-four was heading for financial ruin.
He cranked the window open and blew his cigarette smoke outside. This latest lawsuit sounded bad. What was worse, that stupid cow, Amanda Hart, had squealed to the press.
Before he even opened the summons to court earlier this morning, he had spilled coffee on his own image peering up from the front page of the Miami Herald. 'CELEBRITY SUES PROMINENT PLASTIC SURGEON!' The headlines had screamed, and Reynolds gritted his teeth and growled.
He had warned Amanda, 40-EEE implants were too large for her petite, 5'2 frame, but she had insisted. Now she looked like a pornographic pouter pigeon and she had the nerve to hold him to blame for lost income. Apparently, the movie studio that hired her to play the part of a teenage tomboy, in some action flick, had cancelled her contract. (Stating," There was a whole different market she could pursue on the other side of town; a "bluer" market, to be precise)
Reynolds had not spoken with his attorney yet, but if the ten million dollar figure in the lawsuit was accurate; he was (financially) finished.
He sighed and looked down, as some sort of high-end sport sedan purred into the parking lot. Reynolds loved beautiful cars and thought he knew most of them on sight. God knew he owned enough of his own; a Mercedes ST and a Cadillac Escalade for his own private use. His ex had the Lexus and his girlfriend had recently talked him in to buying the latest, most outrageously expensive Beemer on the market.
He looked at the gray hood of the gleaming automobile and gasped. Is that a Rolls Royce? He wondered. Wow! He watched as a young man got out of the car, chirped the locks and swung a jacket over his shoulder. The man looked up at where Reynolds stood in the window and gave a jaunty, little salute.
Reynolds scowled and cranked the window shut. "Cocky, little shit." he mumbled. Popping a breath mint into his mouth, Dr. David Reynolds donned his custom cut lab coat and went out of his office to consult with yet another rich socialite, who had more money than sense.
***********
An hour later, Reynold’s receptionist, Bonnie, knocked on his door.
“Come!" he snarled, slamming the phone down on his no-good, useless, attorney's ear. Amanda Hart was indeed suing for ten million bucks and Arnie Lebowitz (the asshole lawyer) said there was nothing he could do to stop her.
Reynolds worst fear was coming true. It was going to be goodbye to the trophy girlfriend and so long to the condominium, in Vale, Colorado. He would be lucky if he did not go bankrupt!
Bonnie Kennedy stuck her head in the door. She was used to the doctor's tirades, but this seemed worse than usual. She hoped she had guessed right, with the client in the waiting room.
"Doctor," she said, "There is an INTERESTING client in the waiting room." She gave Reynolds a nod and a slight wink of her left eye. This had been the "big money" symbol, for as long as she worked in this office. The doctor sat up in his chair.
"How interesting, Bonnie?" he asked calmly, although a flush of excitement warmed his cheeks. A half a million in cash, he thought. That is all he needed to get the insurance boys off his back, if this latest lawsuit went forward.
Bonnie gave the doctor a smug smile. "Very interesting, sir," she said. "Shall I see him in?"
Reynolds smiled back and said, "Give me five minutes, okay?" She nodded and left.
He took another slug of bourbon, stepped in to the bathroom for a pee and gargled with some mouthwash. Just as he started to sit down, there was a knock at the door.
Dr. Reynolds remained standing and watched as the most physically beautiful man he had ever seen, walked in to the room.
He was tall, about 6'4, and lean, with long, ropy muscles and perfect, unblemished skin. His hair was long as well and fell past the man's shoulders in perfect, golden waves. The eyes that stared at him, in cool appraisal, were as green as emeralds and twice as hard.
He had had his teeth bleached. If he had a flaw at all, it was those teeth; they were too big and too many, and gleamed with the shiny luster of the finest pearls.
Reynolds recognized the young man who had driven up in the Rolls. He stuck out his hand to shake, but was ignored. The man sat down in the chair opposite his desk and crossed one long leg over the other. Bonnie Kennedy raised a brow and said, "Doctor Reynolds, this is Michael Lattimer." She closed the door and left.
Reynolds cleared his throat and sat down. "Hello, Mr. Lattimer. What can I do for you, today?"
Lattimer yawned briefly and said, "I need you to make me look older."
Reynold’s mouth dropped open, in shock. "What do you mean? Why?" He sputtered.
Lattimer pursed his lips in a moue of disapproval and withdrew an envelope from his coat pocket. He placed the envelope on the blotter in front of the plastic surgeon and said, "The why of it should hardly be of interest to you, doctor. Suffice it to say, I am in a position to pay you very well for your services."
He smiled and inclined his head, slightly, at the envelope on the desk. Reynolds picked up the envelope and while opening it, said, "Well, there is the standard fee and considering the work I would need to do..." His words trailed off, in a gasp.
The check inside was made out in his name and the amount was for ten million dollars. Lattimer held up a hand. "Consider that a retainer, doctor."
Reynold’s face was red and the shock of seeing the exact amount needed to clear away the clouds of the impending lawsuit made him feel dizzy with relief.
Lattimer grinned and said, "There is only one little rub. You see... I have many business partners who are interested in this same, what you call it? Ah yes, procedure. My friends and I, well, we age too slowly, you see. For practical reasons, we now must begin to appear older. It will be an on-going process. So, if you accept my proposal, you will cater exclusively to me and my associates...yes?"
Reynolds had initially thought that he was in the presence of a very young man, some Euro-trash rich kid who wanted a nose job, or something. He realized now, however, that something very, very old crouched behind this man's eyes and stared out at him, with an ancient hunger.
"What?" He whispered. "What's the catch?"
Lattimer threw back his head and laughed. "Catch! Ah, you Americans, with your funny sayings. Like, catch you, yes?" He pantomimed grabbing a hold of something and squeezing tight. The sheer grace and power of the man's movements made Reynolds flinch back in his chair.
Lattimer stood suddenly and leaned over Reynold’s desk. "I will make you rich doctor, wealthy beyond your possible imaginings. All debts paid, okay? I shall buy this building for you, so no more rent. So much money, but only one catch." He giggled with glee.
"What is it?" Reynolds knew that there was something really off about this man. The whole thing was probably some sort of swindle, but he could not look away from the other man's gaze. Those green eyes burned into his, like laser beams, and he felt himself grow weak and lightheaded.
The young man moved around the desk, and leaned over the doctor. He said, "You doctor, must become young again."
David Reynolds no longer saw the man who knelt at his side and whispered in his ear. Instead, he saw himself, young again and rich.
He smiled, as the man's lips touched his neck and the old, old voice whispered, "Caught you!"
**********************
Ten months later, after extensive renovation, the clinic reopened.
It was a privately owned clinic now, which was practically unheard of in such an exclusive neighborhood.
There was a new doctor in charge and because he turned away practically every client that managed to get through to the lovely new receptionist, the waiting list for new patients was almost four years out. That made the wish to have work done there even more desirable.
Strangely enough, however, it seemed that whether the clientele were going in or checking out, the good doctor worked with only the older, geriatric set.
